Updates

Diabetic Sharps Disposal

Selected pharmacies are now offering a take back service for residents that need to dispose of diabetic sharps. To take part in this service you will need to ask your GP for a 1litre sharps container on prescription. You can then take the full container to any of the participating pharmacies and they will ensure it is disposed of safely.

If you are not able to get to one of the participating pharmacies, your GP or diabetic clinic should take back the full container instead.

Consultation feedback on the Green Garden Waste Service

Many residents contacted us about the greengarden waste service changes and gave us their views on what should happen to it.
What residents told us…

  • Many residents said they would prefer a free service, however this option is not available to us because of the financial pressure the Council is under. By offering an opt in service residents will only pay if the service is used.
  • 61% of responses said they would pay for a green bin service
  • This tells us that although resdients would prefer a free service, they value the collections enough to pay for the benefit of receiving the service.
  • Only 5% said they would want more than 1 bin
  • Residents have told us that the majority feel 1 bin is sufficient for this service, by offering only 1 bin per property this will also support our waste minimisation aims.
  • 77% wished to apply for the green bin service by post, 14% online and 8% at the Customer Service Centre (These application options have now been set up for residents to apply for the service)
  • Home composting and using the Household Waste Recycling Sites were other methods identified by residents for disposing of thier green garden waste if they did not want to apply for a green collection
  • Please call 0845 077 0757 to order a discounted compost bin.

Changes to Green Garden Waste Service

The current system for green bin collections will remain until the end of November this year and the service will, as usual, be suspended for December and January and February of next year. More information can be found by going to Green Waste Collection Change / Registration for Green Waste Collection links in the above list.

In October, you will receive your Collection Calendar for 2009 and this will explain how you can register for future green bin collections.

Due to increased financial pressures and the need to invest in residents' priorities, the Council has had to make some tough decisions. Charging for green waste is one of these decisions. From March 2009 there will be a charge for your fortnightly green bin collection should you wish to use it.

Collections will run from March to November inclusive. The total cost for the bin per year will be £30. Charging for green waste collections will bring us into line with other councils within Worcestershire and throughout the UK.

If you do not wish to use the chargeable green waste collection, please keep your green wheeled bin as you will need it for the future co-mingled collections.

The Future

In the future we are going to be able to collect your cans, plastics, glass and paper all together (co-mingled) from one container. This will happen once Worcestershire County Council has opened up a new facility to take all this mixed material; this is currently being built and is due to open at the end on 2009.
