YOUNG
PEOPLE - FOR YOUNG PEOPLE BY YOUNG
PEOPLE
DAAT also gets involved in projects by providing funding,
or by being part of the working group that aim to educate,
support and inform young people….BUT projects
are designed by groups of young people FOR young people…
Here are some of the
things that are going on currently….
University
of Worcester
The
students at the NUS have been very pro-active in
getting harm reduction messages across to the other
students about binge drinking. The Students Union run
a survey of ‘student lifestyles and drinking
habits’. The aim of the survey was to inform the
union what their students know about ‘drinking’ in
general. The information gathered from the survey then
informed the Union what went into the responsible
drinks campaign, which was launched at towards the end
of the semester.
A
group of students wanted to find a fun way of getting
other students’ involved and sharing information and
basic facts of how to have fun when out drinking and
more importantly being responsible and safe. Students
at the NUS designed T-shirts, which were worn during a
week in the semester. The bright orange T-shirts had a
pictures of a duck looking drunk with a logo ‘Do you
know that D.U.C.K’ – Drinking Uncontrollably
causes Khaos’
Here
are the t-shirt designs the students came up with!
Underage drinking DVD
A DVD resource around underage drinking has been
developed by a partnership led by the Worcester City
Community Safety Coordinator. This is being supported
and developed in partnership with organisations such
as the DAAT, Children’s Social Care Services,
Primary Care Trusts, Police and Youth Workers and drug
agencies. This resource pack will be used in schools
and youth clubs around the county. A workbook has been
developed alongside the DVD, as this will make it
usable for teachers and youth workers in both school
and youth club settings.
The DVD is unique in tackling the messages of
underage and binge drinking through the following
ways:
• Use messages that will be relevant to young people
• Messages that pertain to the image of young people
and demonstrate how drinking damages your sex appeal:
e.g. e.g. how sexy you are when you are crashed out on
the floor, you’ve wet yourself and you’ve got sick
in your hair?
• Images that combine the above with traditional
messages such as sexual health, or ending up in
A&E – how respected are you when you’re having
your stomach pumped; how cool are you when boys are
ashamed to go out with you because you let others take
advantage of you a few years previous, when you were
blitzed?
Young people were involved in focus workshops and
a residential weekend for getting young people's input
to developing the DVD. They have been involved in all
stages of the DVD from writing the script, filming,
editing and have even starred in the DVD film!
