Common Induction for the Children and Young People's Workforce

Workforce Practice Development

What Is It?

The Children and Young People's Development Council (CWDC), has developed a set of visions and principles for induction for all those who work with children, young people and families in England.

These visions and principles for induction are to bring the children and young people's workforce towards a common understanding and direction on induction.

The aim is to establish an expectation that everyone in the workforce should have an induction based on the common core of skills and knowledge for the children's workforce (the common core of skills and knowledge), tailored appropriately to their role and setting.

The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for the children's workforce sets out the basic skills and knowledge needed by all people (including volunteers), whose work brings them into regular contact with children, young people and their families. The skills and knowledge are described under six main headings:
  • Effective communication and engagement with children, young people and their families.
  • Child and young person development.
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child.
  • Supporting transitions.
  • Multi-agency working.
  • Sharing information.

For more information visit the Children's Workforce Development Council

How Does It Run?

3 days of face to face training
  • 6 month development programme to assess work based practice and learning.
  • E- learning programmes.

The use of a blended learning approach to try and meet the need of a vast and  varied workforce, making sure that participants can not only learn the knowledge but able to evidence the skills in their own organisation.

What Will Participants Learn?

By the end of the course you will have an understanding of:
  • The principles and values essential for working with children and young people.
  • Your role as a worker.
  • Health and safety requirements.
  • How to communicate effectively.
  • An understanding of the development of children and young people.
  • Safeguarding children and young people.
  • Developing yourself.

Who Is It For?

This is the start of the journey for those coming new into the workforce or wants to start the path into professional qualification; we are all here to improve outcomes for children and young people, why not be the first to be part of the evolution of the children's workforce?
