School Crossing Patrol Service

School CrossingWorcestershire's School Crossing Patrol Service assists pedestrians to cross the road in over 100 locations around the county.

The School Crossing Patrol Act of 1953 established the role of School Crossing Patrols and their role has never been more important.

School crossing Patrols are an invaluable asset to the local communities they serve, the role involves challenges from inhospitable weather, poor driving and children. But the job is greatly satisfying through the relationships that they build up.

School Crossing Patrols receive full training and supervision with annual site reviews. The School Crossing Patrol Service works in collaboration with the Smarter Choices Team, who has responsibility for School Travel Planning.

We need a School Crossing Patrol at our school

Contact the Head Teacher of the local school who can then request a site visit. Prior to the visit we will require full details of the recommendation and where the site should be located. Site assessments are scored taking into consideration the highway conditions, volume of traffic and number of pedestrians.

The Law -

When you see a School Crossing Patrol step into the road ahead of you displaying the sign, you must stop to allow pedestrians to cross the road.

It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act of 1984 if you do not stop when signalled to do so by a School Crossing Patrol.

If you do not stop, the possible penalties include:

  • 3 points to the licence
  • Up to £1000 fine
  • Banned for driving
