Kidderminster Railway Station

The project at Kidderminster Railway Station is a £3.575million project to upgrade the facilities at the station to the standards rail travellers expect in the 21st Century. The County Council is working in partnership with Network Rail, the Severn Valley Railway, Kidderminster Railway Museum, bus and rail operating companies and Wyre Forest District Council.

Railway Station

There are four parts to the project.

  1. A new station building and improved passenger facilities
  2. A new layout on the station forecourt with improved facilities for bus services
  3. An improved walking connection from the new station building to the Severn Valley Railway station building
  4. Changes to the entrance junction to the railway station from the A448 Comberton Hill

The objectives are to provide a facility to integrate bus and rail services in Kidderminster; improve information on bus and rail services available at the railway station and provide for all modes of travel (e.g. bus, rail, cycle, walk, taxi and park & ride).

The facility will link with developments taking place in Kidderminster town centre and provide a suitable gateway to the town. All elements of the scheme will work with the heritage setting of the station area created by the Severn Valley Railway.

The programme began with construction of the forecourt works in June 2009 with a view to have these complete by Christmas 2010. Construction of the station building will then begin in January 2011 and all works should be complete in the summer of 2011.

29th JANUARY 2010

This week we have mostly been considering large Lorries carrying locomotives and other heritage railway rolling stock. The Severn Valley Railway regularly loans out heritage rolling stock to other railways and indeed borrows such trains from other preserved railways. Due to cost and the administration surrounding use of the national rail network it is simpler for these moves to use the highway.

This means at Kidderminster, where we wish to improve the entrance junction to the station we have to pay particular attention to how these moves take place when carrying out our design. To make the design as safe as possible for pedestrians there is pressure to reduce the width of the entrance junction to make it easier to cross the road.  However that lorry has to get out!
