The Diglis Bridge Project, Connect2 in Worcesterconnect2 logo large

This scheme was completed in 2010.

About Connect2 in Worcester

The Connect2 project in Worcester provided a walking and cycling bridge over the River Severn at Diglis, together with a network of connecting walking and cycling routes in this area of the city including the riverside.

Connect2 Worcester forms part of the national Sustrans Connect2 project to improve local travel in 79 communities across the UK by creating new walking and cycling routes.

The Sustrans Connect2 project was one of four projects competing for a single £50 million award from the Big Lottery Fund's 'Living Landmarks: The People's Millions.' Sustrans Connect2 was announced as the winning project on the ITV1 lunchtime news on Wednesday, 12th December 2007.

Worcester Connect2 was awarded £850,000 of the £50 million funding.

During June 2009, an extensive consultation was undertaken. Read the Diglis Bridge Consultation Analysis Report This document is in Adobe PDF format (139KB).

Funding

In addition to the £850,000 awarded from Sustrans, Worcestershire County Council contributed a further £1.5 million on the construction of the Diglis Bridge and a further £450,000 on the development of connecting walking and cycling links.

Worcester City Council contributed an additional £1m which has been spent on developing the riverfront between the New Road Bridge and Diglis Island.

About the Bridge

The Diglis Bridge is positioned just south of Diglis Island and the supporting walk-cycle links provide vital links for Worcester, Malvern and Powick residents. The bridge connects Powick and Lower Wick with the city centre, using route 46 of the National Cycle Network and also significantly enhances links between St Johns and Cherry Orchard, Red Hill and St Peters.
