Stourport-on-Severn Bridge - Refurbishment
This scheme was completed in 2007.
Why were the works carried out?
The current Stourport-on-Severn Bridge was constructed in
1870, replacing a number of earlier structures.
The Grade II listed structure is predominantly constructed of
cast and wrought iron. The bridge carries the A451 across the River
Severn between Stourport-on-Severn and Areley Kings.
The condition of the bridge began to raise concerns for
Worcestershire County Council in 2004, where an inspection revealed
that the structure was beginning to deteriorate. Refurbishment
was carried out and completed in 2007, which included the fitting
of a reinforced concrete slab and waterproof membrane, allowing
better distribution of vehicle weight across the the bridge. The
restoration was carried out in partnership with English Heritage,
who agreed the installation of cast iron containment road curbs to
retain the historic look and feel of the bridge, as well as
restoration of the decoration and heritage light columns.
How was the scheme financed?
The scheme cost approximately £1,500,000, and was financed by
Worcestershire County Council, using its Integrated Transport Block
maintenance allocation.
