Bromyard Road Key Corridor of Improvement Scheme

This scheme was completed in June, 2011.

Why were the works carried out?

The Bromyard Road corridor is currently recognised as one of Worcester's most congested routes. In April 2009 Worcestershire County Council was awarded £3.2m from the Community Infrastructure Fund to create a West of Worcester Key Corridor of Improvement Scheme along the A44 Bromyard Road and was endorsed by Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet.

The investment forms part of the wider Worcester Transport Strategy, a major programme of investment to upgrade and improve transport infrastructure in Worcester to meet existing and future demand to travel, by providing improved infrastructure for all modes of transport, supporting Park and Ride and new highway infrastructure where this can be justified. For more details, view the Information Leaflet This document is in Adobe PDF format (504KB).

How was the scheme financed?

The scheme was financed using the following resources:

£3.2 million has been secured from external Homes & Communities Agency Government funding as a result of a successful Community Infrastructure Funding business Case Submission

In addition, there is £468,000 of other funding, from Section 106 and Section 278 agreements secured from developers as part of planning consents in the area and additional grants, including the Big Lottery Fund.

What has been achieved?

The scheme has delivered a range of benefits, including:
  • A reduction in congestion and 'bunching' of traffic along the route, which has improved environmental conditions.
  • An overall improvement in journey times and journey time reliability for all modes of transport.
  • Improved public realm, through sensitive planting and landscaping
  • A significant improvement in the quality of infrastructure and conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and buses.
  • Provision of suitably enhanced infrastructure to enable and facilitate the development of the Earls Court and Grove Farm sites.
  • Improved management of on-street parking.
  • Provision of bus priority measures to support the development of a Park and Ride service from a future Grove Farm Park and Ride site to Sixways Interchange, via Worcester City Centre and the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
