Road Safety Education

A variety of Road Safety education is available to
pupils in Worcestershire schools as part of Worcestershire County
Council's commitment to reducing the number of accidents involving
children.
The following activities are suitable for primary school
children with Level 3 cycle training also available to Secondary
School pupils aged 14 and over.
- Classroom Talks – These are available for all
Key Stage pupils in Primary Schools and can be tailored to
particular road safety issues that schools may have.
- Pedestrian Training - Practical
instruction in correct behaviour when walking and crossing roads is
suitable for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 pupils.
- The 'Stepping Out' Pedestrian Project - Has
been developed for children in Year 4 to help them develop their
basic pedestrian skills. The programme contains teacher led
classroom-based work as well as two practical activities on the
roads around the school.
- Speed Awareness Training – Appropriate for
Year 5 pupils and helps to raise awareness of the speed of traffic
and the need to allow sufficient time for crossing roads
safely
- Cycle Training -
Worcestershire County Council delivers the national
Bikeability Standard of Cycle Training and has a pool of
qualified instructors to ensure as many young people as possible
can benefit from the scheme. Each course will be delivered by two
accredited cycle instructors and there are 3 levels of training
available:
- Level 1 will offer basic bike handling
skills in a controlled playground environment. Year 4 is the
ideal age for this.
- Level 2 will teach children to cycle planned
routes on quiet roads offering a real cycling experience. This
is ideal of Years 5 and 6.
- Level 3 will ensure cyclists are able to
manage all traffic conditions. This is suitable for secondary
school age pupils aged 14 years and over who are likely to be
cycling to school on routes which involve cycling on busier
roads.
- Pre-driver Training – This course, which is
usually provided for Year 12 pupils, has been successfully piloted
at Secondary Schools across the county over the last year. It
aims to equip new drivers with the vital skills and knowledge they
need to stay safe on the roads before they start formal driving
lessons. It includes an off-road driving course when students can
get behind the wheel.
