The Office for National Statistics (ONS)
carries out a census to find out more about the people who live in
England and Wales and about the make-up of local
neighbourhoods.
The 2011 census took place on 27 March 2011.
ONS sent out questionnaires for around 25 million households to
complete, asking about work, health, national identity,
citizenship, ethnic background, education, second homes, language,
marital status and so on. Statistics based on the answers to the
2011 census will be used to build a picture of today’s society.
ONS are scheduled to release a timetable showing when the
results of the census will be ready for release in early
2012. it is anticipated that the first set of results from the
census, probably population figures, will be available sometime in
the summer of 2012.
