The Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a census to find out more about the people who live in England and Wales and about the make-up of local neighbourhoods.

The 2011 census took place on 27 March 2011. ONS sent out questionnaires for around 25 million households to complete, asking about work, health, national identity, citizenship, ethnic background, education, second homes, language, marital status and so on. Statistics based on the answers to the 2011 census will be used to build a picture of today’s society.

Due to the breadth and depth of the 2011 Census results, the statistics on the main resident population base (usual residents) will be released in four stages:

• First release 16 July 2012: Age and sex, and occupied households estimates for England and for Wales

• Second release November 2012 – February 2013: Key and Quick statistics

• Phase 1 - 11 December 2012: Key Statistics for local authorities in England and Wales
• Phase 2 - 30 January 2013: Key and Quick Statistics tables for sub-local authority geographies
   

• Third release March 2013 – June 2013: Local Characteristics

• Fourth release July 2013 – October 2013: Detailed Characteristics, Theme and Armed Forces
