<< Back to Recycling and Waste main page

In December 1998 Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council signed a 25 year contract to provide waste management facilities to be operated on our behalf by Severn Waste Services.

The waste contract enables the Council's long term strategy for the management of household waste in Herefordshire and Worcestershire to be implemented.  It includes the provision of Household Recycling Centres, transfer stations, a landfill site and a range of treatment and disposal methods including a Commingled Materials Reclamation Facility (EnviroSort) and a Central Composting facility.

The following Waste Management facilities are presently operated by Severn Waste Services in Worcestershire and Herefordshire on behalf of the two Councils:

 EnviroSort

EnviroSort

In November 2009 a sorting facility for recyclables, EnviroSort, opened in Norton, near Worcester. EnviroSort, accepts all of the recyclables collected in your recycling collection and is operated on our behalf by Severn Waste Services
Household Recycling Centre

Household Recycling Centres

Household Recycling Centres are provided in Herefordshire and Worcestershire for the residents of the two counties to recycle and dispose of their household waste. The Commercial Vehicle and Trailer Permit Scheme is in operation at all Household Recycling Centres

 central composting

Central Composting

Green waste collected from the Household Recycling Centres and household garden waste collections is composted at a central composting site   .

Transfer Station

Transfer Stations

Waste collected by some district council lorries is compacted into larger quantities before transport to disposal facilities. This reduces the number of journeys needed to dispose of waste. There are four transfer stations (Bromsgrove, Hereford, Leominster and Redditch).

EnviRecover

Residual Waste Treatment

Currently, the majority of rubbish produced in Herefordshire and Worcestershire that isn't recycled goes to the landfill site at Hill and Moor that is operated on our behalf by Severn Waste Services. As space there is limited and legislation requires us to find alternatives to landfill, a treatment facility is required.

In May 2010 our contractor submitted a planning application to Worcestershire County Council proposing a new Energy from Waste facility, called EnviRecover, on a site in Hartlebury, near Kidderminster.

 Landfill site

Landfill Sites

The majority of rubbish collected from households in Herefordshire and Worcestershire that isn't recycled is disposed of in the landfill site at Hill and Moor, near Pershore
