Hanbury Wharf is a closed Landfill site that was operational pre
1974 and closed in 1983. It accepted Domestic household waste and
non-hazardous commercial wastes.
It has an average waste depth of 7 metres, a maximum of 12
metres and a minimum of 3 metres. It accepted 581 000m3
of waste over an area of 8.3 hectares.
The site has an active gas control system. It
comprises of twenty-one internal wells linked to a flare stack that
burns off the landfill gas in a controlled manner, this ensures
that the potential for gas migration is kept to a
minimum. In addition there are twenty seven external
boreholes that are monitored for gas and groundwater levels.
