Engineering

The Engineering Group is responsible for designing and managing mechanical and electrical works, and sets standards for the quality of Building Services Engineering installations within the Council's property portfolio.

Main duties of the Team:

  • Supporting the Architects and Building Surveyors on all aspects of engineering.
  • Detailed design of mechanical, electrical and control systems for building projects.
  • Setting and publishing engineering standards and design guidance.
  • Scrutiny of design work undertaken by external Consulting Engineers.
  • Preparing the Council's policies on water quality and Legionella prevention.
  • Providing engineering input to sustainable design, Building Regulations submissions and BREEAM assessments.
  • Providing energy and water advice, monitoring and targeting and carbon management.

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Team in Client Support ensures that the heating, cooling and ventilation systems (amongst others) operate at maximum efficiency and that plant failure is minimised.

The team specifies and organises service contracts, manages the planned maintenance programme, advises on energy saving methods including the installation of energy saving devices, and provides technical support to building managers in the event of any problems.

Main duties of the Team:

  • Maintenance of the mechanical engineering installations to ensure that they operate at maximum efficiency.
  • Mechanical service contracts (heating installations, ventilation, air conditioning, showers, dust extraction, oil, gas,hot and cold water services).
  • Gas soundness testing programme.
  • Reactive maintenance needs on a daily basis.
  • Management of the mechanical engineering planned maintenance works programme.
  • Management of the mechanical condition survey programme, including responsibility for the accuracy of the data.
  • Technical advice to Officers in Charge and building managers, and design staff.
  • Building and energy management controls systems.
  • Defect diagnosis.

Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering Team in Client Support ensures that the hard wired electrical installations and fire and intruder alarms are maintained to a good standard in those buildings that have signed up to the Service Level Agreement.

The team specifies and organises test, inspection and service contracts, manages the planned maintenance programme, advises on energy saving methods including the installation of energy saving lighting controls and fittings, and provides technical support to building managers in the event of any problems.

Main duties of the Team

  • Maintenance of the electrical engineering installations to ensure that they operate safely and effectively and that relevant regulations are met.
  • Service contracts (alarms and lifts).
  • Electrical test and inspection programme.
  • Reactive maintenance needs on daily basis.
  • Management of the electrical engineering planned maintenance works programme.
  • Management of the electrical condition survey programme, including responsibility for the accuracy of the data.
  • Technical advice to Officers in Charge, building managers, and design staff.
  • Defect diagnosis.
