Qualifications and Career Paths
| Introductory training: |
Usually short courses/sessions that introduce applicants to
childcare, early education or playwork. These do not lead to a
qualification but can be used as a foundation for moving on to
recognised qualification training:
- Our free 'Choices Information
Session' is suitable for anyone who wants to find out more
about working with children, young people and their families but is
unsure of all the options available to them.
- Our free 'Childminding Information
Sessions'
(150 KB) are suitable for anyone
considering working as a chilminder and wants to find out more
about the steps involved and training required.
This page gives examples of the type of opportunities and
progression routes available with certain levels of qualification.

| Level 6 qualifications |
Progression: PGCE Teaching Qualification, post graduate study
in social work or health studies, or Early Years Professional
Status |
| Level 5 qualifications |
Progression: BA (Hons) Degree or top up with an extra year to
the BA Early Childhood Studies. |
| Level 4 qualifications with experience |
Progression: Foundation Degree or BA in Early Childhood
Education Studies or a senior practitioner post within early years.
Job roles:
- Advanced practitioner
- Development worker
- Children's Centre Manager
- Managerial role

| Level 3 qualifications |
Progression: After gaining relevant experience
progression could be to a level 4 qualification, Foundation Degree
or Assessors Award.
Job roles:
- Supervisor, Manager or Deputy
- Network childminder
- Family Support worker
- Tutor or assessor for childcare and early education
candidates

| Level 2 qualifications |
Progression: With relevant experience progression could
be to a level 3 qualification, which could lead to working in a
supervisory role or network childminder
Job roles:
- Childminder / Childminding Assistant
- Nursery / Pre-School Assistant
- Assistant playworker
- Support worker
|
| Level 1 qualifications or introductory level
training |
Progression: Level 1 qualifications develop basic skills
and can progress to a level 2 qualification, which could
lead to working in an assistant role
Job roles:
- Voluntary work in a variety of early years, childcare or
playwork settings
- Childminder / Childminding Assistant

| Post qualification awards: |
Qualifications that can be undertaken following initial
qualification training. These usually focus on a specific
topic. |
| Continuing Professional Development
(CPD): |
An on-going process of continual growth that improves the
capability and potential of an individual. A subsidised training
programme to support CPD is offered by Worcestershire County
Council's Early Years and Childcare Service. You can find our more
