 Environment Rating Scales

The Environment Rating Scales are internationally recognised evidence-based quality improvement tools, specifically designed for the childcare environment. Originally developed (with the exception of ECERS-E) in America, the scales are now used internationally, and they enable settings to evaluate their environment and provision, and identify clear steps for development in order to improve outcomes for children.

Early Years officers have been conducting FCCERS audits with childminders and ECERS audits in group settings since 2010.  In response to feedback from providers, we have been supporting settings with their own ECERS audits and many practitioners and managers have attended ECERS co-audit training.

We are also now inviting settings to take part in an ITERS co-audit, and a number of managers and room supervisors have attended co-audit training.  ITERS looks at the provision for children under two and a half, and we began audits in February 2014.  There will be further co-audit training and audits available to more settings throughout 2014.

Find out about more resources to help you prepare for your audit or use the scales in your setting.
