Your Child's Education is Important

Research shows that children who attend school regularly are likely to be more successful. A pupil who misses a day of school a week misses an equivalent of two whole years in their school life. This obviously leads to gaps in their knowledge that become difficult to fill.

A recent survey has indicated that more than 70% of children who did not attend school regularly admitted to committing at least one criminal offence. And half a day a week missed during years 10 and 11 can mean the loss of a grade for every GCSE taken.

Worcestershire County Council is focussed on improving overall school attendance and reducing persistent absence through working on initiatives in partnership with schools and other agencies. Our aim is to raise awareness of the problems and solutions to parents and carers, pupils, schools and communities/ local businesses.

Unacceptable reasons for absence would include:
  • Shopping trips
  • Birthday treats and trips out
  • Looking after others at home (siblings or elderly family members)
  • Non-urgent medical or dental appointments

Responsibilities of parents and carers regarding truancy (unauthorised Absence from School)

The Education Act states that parents and carers must ensure that their child of school age receives a suitable education. For most children this is full time schooling.

Children registered at a school must attend regularly. Failure to do so could lead to legal action being taken. Upon conviction the maximum fine could be £2,500 and/or up to three months imprisonment.

Only the School can authorise an absence.
