Bikeability Cycle Training
What is Bikeability?
Bikeability is cyclist training for the 21st century and
aims to get more people cycling, more safely and more
often.
Worcestershire County Council has developed a new Cycle Training
scheme that is consistent across the county and complies with the
Bikeability National Standard of Cycle Training expected by central
government.
It will replace the previous two-system approach including
Bronze/Silver Cycle Proficiency and delivery of training via Cycle
Experience.
How does Bikeability work?
A pool of qualified cycle instructors has been recruited to
ensure that as many pupils as possible can benefit from the scheme
which will be delivered from April 2011. Each course will be
delivered by two accredited cycle instructors.
There are three levels of training available:
- Level 1 - Will offer basic bike handling
skills in a controlled playground environment. Year 4 is an
ideal age for this training.
- Level 2 - Will teach children to cycle planned
routes on quiet roads offering a real cycling experience. This
training is suited to Years 5 and 6.
- Level 3 - Will ensure cyclists are able to
manage all traffic conditions. This is suitable for secondary
school age children who are likely to be cycling to school on
routes which involve cycling on busier roads.
In order for the scheme to be sustained at a high quality, it is
proposed that charges will be introduced for training from
September 2011. The charges are:
- £5 per pupil for Level 1
- £10 per pupil for Level 2
- £15 per hour for Level 3
