Worcester High Street upgrade work planned to take
place through the night to help traders
Improvement works in High Street,
Worcester, between The Cross and Pump Street, aiming to help the
local economy by making the area more appealing to shoppers have
been planned to take place overnight to cut potential disruption
for local traders and motorists.
Resurfacing, funded by Worcestershire
County Council, Worcester City Council and National Grid Gas, will
take place over five nights in April with road closures in place
between 7.30pm and 5am.
The improvement is planned following the
completion of gas mains replacement with materials being used
similar to those of a successful project in Oxford to ensure it's
in-keeping with the conservation of the area.
Businesses will be contacted by the County
Council with further details about the project. Those with
questions can get in touch with officers via the Worcestershire Hub
on 0845 607 2005.
Cllr John Smith OBE, County Council
Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: "This is
an excellent opportunity to reinstate this area in a way that's
consistent with the local conservation. It's very pleasing the
County Council, Worcester City Council and utility company have
worked together to manage the essential works to keep disruption to
a minimum, whilst at the same time ensuring a positive outcome for
everyone."
Cllr Simon Geraghty, Leader of
Worcester City Council said: "Worcester's High Street is
the heart of the City's retail economy and used daily by thousands
of workers, shoppers and visitors. It was a concern when we learnt
of the extent of the gas mains work but by working together we will
ensure that the condition of the High Street is improved. A new
uniform surface will enhance the City Centre, support our aim to
attract more visitors and make it an even more appealing
environment for shoppers."
