Celebrating the achievements of young people

Young people from all across Worcestershire gathered to celebrate the outstanding achievements of a special few in a recent awards ceremony specifically for 'Looked After Children'.

The event was organised by Worcestershire County Council's, Integrated Service for Looked After Children (ISL), so they can pay tribute to the youngsters, aged 12-18, who have excelled in 2011.

The night, which was hosted by Worcestershire's Children in Care Council, enjoyed a touch of star quality as guests shared their evening with the Worcester Warriors rugby team and Britain's Got Talent sensations Pip.

Five awards were handed out on the night which will be handed out for: Art & Creativity, Support & Community, Personal Achievement, Sport & Leisure and the Annie Wise Special Award, given to a young teen who has never missed a day or school.

As well as highlighting the significant achievements of the young people attending, the ILS are hoping that events such as this will help to raise awareness of the urgent need for foster carers for 12-18 year olds.

The Fostering Service is currently looking to recruit carers who are willing to open their homes to the older age bracket of young people as there is a shortage across the country.

Director of Children's Services Gail Quinton said: "Nights like this are a great opportunity to show the children how proud we are of the things they accomplish. Each one of them deserves the chance to take pride in what they've achieved. Special thanks must go to the families and foster families because they go above and beyond the call of duty every single day and, without them, none of this would have been possible."

The celebration took place at the Guildhall in Worcester on Friday, January 27.
