Councillors' health bids come pouring in
Applications have been pouring in from county
councillors to support healthy lifestyle projects in their local
communities through the £500,000 Community Leadership for Health
Fund.
The Fund was set up by NHS Worcestershire in
September 2008 to help county councillors act as champions for
better health and play a role in improving the health of their
constituents and councillors are working hard to ensure that all
the money that's available is put to good use.
The latest round of bids has seen some
innovative and high quality projects approved -
· a new skateboard
ramp in a local park that everyone can use
· a table tennis
club for older people
· an allotment
scheme with disabled access and raised beds
· dance and fitness
workshops for 11-16 yr olds
· sexual health
advice sessions for young people
· a learning
station resource for people with profound disabilities to
participate fully in recreational activities.
County Councillor John Smith OBE,
Worcestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Health
Improvement, said: “It’s good to see the work that elected
members have been doing with groups and organisations to encourage
and promote healthier lifestyles.
"I've been very impressed with all the ideas
coming in – it's really exciting to see what can be achieved.
It's not just about improving health, it's the social aspects too
which improve people's sense of wellbeing.
"Some of the grants are quite small, but the
difference they will make to people's lives will be huge."
Dr Richard Harling, Director of Public
Health, added: “It is fantastic to see councillors taking
an interest in the health of their constituents and I'm pleased
that so many of our residents will have the opportunity to
benefit.
“These projects have been developed by local
communities for local communities and will make a real difference
to people’s health and people’s lives.
