Latest County Council figures reveal Worcestershire
unemployment rates
The latest unemployment statistics for the
county were published by Worcestershire County Council last
week.
The County Economic Summary for February 2010
reveals that the claimant count for Worcestershire in January 2010
was 13,179 (4.7 per cent of the economically active population).
This represents an increase of 1,107 claimants in comparison to the
previous month, and an increase of 2,709 on the same period last
year.
This rise in claimants is consistent with a
long-term seasonal trend for higher claimant numbers in January
because many people are employed temporarily during the run-up to
Christmas. It should be recognised that in the second half of 2009
the number of claimants stabilised.
The number of notified job vacancies was
2,688, a 5.4 per cent decrease compared to the number of vacancies
in December 2009 but a 179 per cent increase on the number in
January 2009.
The monthly round-up of employment facts and
figures was compiled and published by the County Council's Research
& Intelligence team.
The statistics are broken down by wards and
districts as well as showing the picture for the whole of
Worcestershire. The summary also compares the county with the
latest regional and national data and reveals patterns that emerge
over time.
The County Council is a key partner in
Worcestershire's Economy Action Group, which was created in
response to the national recession, and provides valuable economic
information to the public and private sectors all around the
county.
Councillor Simon Geraghty,
Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Planning,
Economy & Performance, said: "We use this vital
information in our work to protect and promote the local economy,
which is particularly important during the current national
recession. All of the data is available for free online so I
encourage any business that would find it useful to log on and make
use of this free resource."
