Improve your eco-credentials this term – with recycled stationary!

As the start of the new school year approaches, Worcestershire County Council's Waste Prevention Team is encouraging parents to think before buying new stationary and consider choosing a recycled option instead.

A whole range of funky and eco-friendly stationary and craft products are available including notebooks made from recycled paper and circuit boards; pencil cases made from recycled car tyres; rulers made from plastic bags; pens made from recycled computer printers and much more.

Products are readily available on the high street and in some supermarkets.

Cllr BlaggReclaimed arts materials are also available to parents who join the Worcestershire Resource Exchange (WRE). The WRE is a 'scrapstore', reclaiming clean, safe, reusable materials from local businesses and industries and preventing them from ending up in landfill. This veritable Aladdin's cave offers its members a wide range of low cost stationary and materials for arts and crafts projects.

School children are also being encouraged to have 'waste-free' days, reusing their lunchbox and drinks bottle daily along with choosing products with little or no packaging and composting any suitable leftovers such as apple cores and banana skins.

Councillor Anthony Blagg, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Waste and Sustainability, said: "There is no need to splash out on new stationary for the new school term and if new supplies are required, there is a whole host of cost effective, recycled and reclaimed products available.

"This can help reduce the amount of waste created, as can simple steps like replacing disposable drinks cartons with a reusable bottle, not only helping our environment but saving money as well."
