Latest Worcester cycle route gets
underway
Worcestershire County Council is pleased to
announce the commencement today (August 31) of construction work on
the latest section of walking and cycling paths around the
city.
The newest addition to Worcester's cycling and
walking map will be a 720 metre stretch running from Waverley
Street (near the model railway), to the new pedestrian and cycling
bridge. The link is part of the Sustrans Connect2 project
which aims to improve walking and cycling links around the
city.
Dean Martin Contractors will be carrying out
the work to install a hard, all-weather surface along the path. The
route will be closed for approximately five weeks with diversion
routes in place across either the Cherry Orchard playing fields or
the Cherry Orchard nature reserve.
Pupils from the nearby Cherry Orchard Primary
School are currently taking part in a competition to name the
route, with an official naming ceremony taking place later in the
year.
Councillor Derek Prodger MBE,
Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport and
Safe Environment, said: "These works will provide greater
accessibility for walkers and cyclists, and so help reduce traffic
congestion within the city by providing residents with safe and
sustainable travel choices. I am pleased that the
work is starting, delivering the connected walk-cycle links that
local people voted for. The new Diglis bridge and additional links
will increase freedom of movement around Worcester and will improve
quality of life through cost savings, reduced congestion and
improved health."
The project is a joint venture between
Worcestershire County Council, Worcester City Council, Sustrans and
British Waterways and this particular link is funded through the
Big Lottery Fund and developer funding.
