Breastfeeding

Worcestershire Children's Centres believe that breastfeeding is the healthiest way for a woman to feed her baby and recognises the important health benefits now known for both the mother and her child.

Breastfeeding is the healthiest way to feed your baby.

It reduces the risk of:

  • Diarrhoea, vomiting and gastroenteritis.
  • Chest infections.
  • Being obese and developing type 2 diabetes and other illnesses later in life.
  • Ear infections.
  • Sudden infant death syndrome/cot death.
  • Developing eczema.

Breastfeeding is good news for mums as it:

  • Lowers the risk of breast cancer.
  • Lowers the risk of ovarian cancer.
  • Lowers the risk of postnatal depression.

If you would like to find out more information about breastfeeding visit the public health webpages.

Worcestershire children's centres and Worcestershire PCT are working towards Unicef Baby Friendly Accreditation.  All children's centre staff are trained  as part of the breastfeeding policy to ensure all mothers receive information about infant feeding to enable them to make an informed choice about feeding their babies and are supported in their chosen feeding method.  A parent's guide to our breastfeeding policy is available from your Community Midwife, all PCT premises and all children's centres.

Breastfeeding support is available for you and your partner from pregnancy to birth and beyond

View the From Bump to Baby film for advice about feeding your baby and the ways in which your local children's centre can help.
