Joshua – 5-years-old
(quote by adopted child aged 5 years)
Ethnic and Cultural Descent
White British/German; he has been part of British culture since
birth
Family Needed
Joshua will need two parent adopters where one is at home during
the day. In order to meet his cultural and language needs,
Joshua should be placed with white British carers who would be
willing to promote Joshua's German culture. Joshua's mother has not
indicated a preference towards any religious faith and Joshua has
not been affirmed into a faith.
Interests
He enjoys being outside playing in the garden, going for walks
and would spend all day outside if he could. It has become
apparent, however, that Joshua does not like cold weather and will
not go outside to play when it is cold. When he is not
playing outside, Joshua's favourite activities are painting and
being creative; he also loves singing and listening to his
radio.
Personality
Joshua's foster carer describes him as a funny and endearing
child who loves to be helpful and be given little jobs to do. As
Joshua's confidence grows he is becoming more cheeky and
mischievous. Due to Joshua's communication and speech delay he will
occasionally repeat sentences that anyone says to him. He
also picks up words from conversations and will use them in his
play. He has a good memory for names and will always greet
you with a 'hello' followed by your name. He appears to
remember something about each person and every time he meets them
he will recall this memory.
Educational & Social Functioning
Joshua has complex needs in respect of his social and
communication development. Joshua has a Statement of
Education Needs and receives 25 hours of 1:1 support within the
educational setting. He started a slow transition into
mainstream school in January 2011 and has developed a lot in the
last few months.
Relevant Past experience/family history
Joshua has good attachment to his foster carer, her partner and
her children (aged 4, 6 and 14 years).
Special Needs
Joshua likes to know exactly what is happening next and can
still have some negative days when his autistic traits are more
apparent, however his support worker has given him a very good
report.
