Educating Children

Worcestershire County Council currently delivers the following programmes within schools to educate pupils about road safety issues:

Speed Awareness Training

This exercise, designed for years five and six, aims to make children aware of the relationship between speed and distance and how this effects the time it takes for a vehicle to stop The children watch a DVD before participating in practical exercises on the road, which includes measuring a 50 metre distance and timing vehicles passing over this with a stopwatch to reveal the speed of the vehicle. The children also receive a work pack that they can complete during future sessions in the classroom.

Pre-driver training

The Pre-Driver Training course, which is open to students aged 14 and above, has been successfully piloted at Secondary Schools across the county over the last year. It aims to equip new drivers with the vital skills and knowledge they need to stay safe on the roads before they start their journey to passing their test through formal lessons.

The popular course comprises of the three modules. The first is a theatre production of 'New Wheels' on-site. This is followed by a workshop that gets young people to consider their actions on the highway and those of other road-users. The final part sees students get behind the wheel for an hour-long off-road driving course with qualified experts that talk them through both theoretical and practical tuition.
