Skilled Labour
Worcestershire has traditionally had both a
strong manufacturing presence and large agricultural sector.
Today it still boasts world-renowned companies
such as Bosch and Mazak plus leading brands such as Halfords and
Worcestershire Sauce are all here.
Manufacturing employment accounts for over a
quarter of all employment, with agriculture, distribution, hotels
and restaurant and the public sector also major areas of
employment.
Worcestershire has a strong existing and
growing innovation and new development sector. The Central
Technology Belt has had a significant impact and led to the support
and development of Malvern Hills Science Park and Bromsgrove
Technology Park. It is intended that businesses developed at
these parks will grow to become significant employers over the next
decade.
In order to fulfil the objective of a highly
skilled knowledge economy it is important that the workforce has
the qualifications and skills required by employers.
Across Worcestershire, 28% of the population
aged 16-64 was qualified to NVQ Level 4 or higher in 2009. This is
higher than for the West Midlands (25%). Around 48% of the
population were qualified to NVQ Level 3 or above in
Worcestershire.
