Leisure and Recreation Workshops 2011 - 12

Our tranquil surroundings make Bishops Wood a fabulous place to get away from it all and really help bring to life the traditional crafts and workshops we are offering.

Our Leisure courses and workshops are designed to be fun, relaxing and informative.  Suitable for all adults, from complete beginners and those wishing to increase their knowledge and skills.

  • All materials, tools, instruction and handouts are provided.
  • Locally sourced lunch is provided on all full one day and two day courses.
  • Make sure you have enough space in your car to take away what you make!
  • We can accommodate group bookings on specific dates, by arrangement

Introduction to Pole Lathe  -  This is a practical course where you will learn how to cleave, shave and turn green wood using traditional tools.  Learn about the history of the pole lathe and spend the day at your lathe creating something to take home.

Shave Horses  -  Learn traditional skills and techniques whilst building your own custom made shave horse from our sustainably sourced materials. Take home your own custom built shave horse so make sure you have room in your vehicle!

Basket Weaving with Norah Kennedy -  Weave your own basket in beautiful colours of willow and learn some of the history and folklore of willow and baskets. On a one day course you can expect to complete a small round basket suitable for fruit or vegetables.

Whittling workshop  -  Come and have a go at the ancient art of whittling!  Sit around the camp fire and learn safe and effective skills required to work with your selected sustainably coppiced materials from our secure woodland.  Take away what you make!

Digital Photography Weekend Workshop  

This weekend programme will consist of a combination of presentations, practical exercises in the grounds of Bishops Wood and discussions of images taken by participants.

 

Saturday will include:

·         An exploration of camera controls

·         Focussing and metering for improved images

·         Simple ideas on composition

·         Practical exercises in the grounds of Bishops Wood

·         Critique and discussion of photographs

 

Sunday will include:

·         Discussion and demonstration of simple portrait photography

·         Use of natural lighting

·         Controlling focus for creative effects (depths of field)

·         Practical portrait photography in the grounds of Bishops Wood

·         Critique and discussion of photographs

Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th October 2011

Fabulous Flowers  -  Try our seasonal taster sessions and have fun creating a simple but stunning arrangement to take home.

·         Pick up lots of ideas and useful tips! 

·         Ideal for beginners

·         Bring along a small hand towel and floristry scissors if you have them. 

·         All flowers and sundries will be provided for the workshop

It will be possible to purchase your own floristry scissors to take away at cost price if required.

Rustic Furniture  -   This course is an ideal introduction to basic greenwood joinery and the production of rustic furniture using our sustainably sourced wood in the round.  Learn about traditional skills and techniques whilst creating your piece of furniture to take home.

Bow Making  -  A bow is one of the oldest hunting (and fighting) tools there is.  Making your own is one of the enjoyable and satisfying bush craft activities available here at Bishops Wood.  At this one day workshop you will:

·        learn techniques required to make your own 'Lofty Wiseman' bow from a variety of materials including recycled materials and natural timber 

·        make some arrows

·        practice your aim at targets

·        plus lunch around the camp fire

All instruction, material and tools are provided

Rag Rugs  - Create your own motif using the traditional method of rag rugging.  You can use your own pattern or draw inspiration from the wonderful setting here at Bishops Wood.  On the day there will be a variety of textiles, colours and textures to choose from enabling you to create inspired original pieces using this fascinating vintage method.

Introduction to Blacksmithing  -  a beginners / taster workshop where instruction, tools and materials are provided.  Learn about the history, how to set the fire and basic techniques.  You will have the opportunity to create your own piece such as a toasting fork or tongs.

Willow for the Garden with Norah Kennedy -  Make your own garden structures to support and enhance your garden - wigwams, fans, trellis and small hurdles.  Take home your creations so make sure you have plenty of room in your car!

Felting  -  This workshop aims to act as a platform on which to build your felt making skills.  This aim is to unleash your creativity and vanquish the mystery behind making felts.  It's all about 'letting go', regardless of your inexperience with crafts.  It's difficult to go wrong!

 

Built into the day is a simple project to help get you on your way to exploring the endless possibilities of felt.
