National Archaeology Week

The Northwick Community Heritage Project

Our Outreach Officer, Deborah Overton, is leading a guided walk through Northwick and Bevere, Worcester on Saturday 12th July and some of the county archaeology team are excavating an 18th century latrine at Croome Park on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July. Full details of the National Archaeology Week.

Visit our special feature Unlocking The Past. Funded by the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, via English Heritage. this project is creating internet resources and hosting events which tell the story of human occupation in Worcestershire from prehistoric times onwards. A new theme entitled Early Medieval Cemeteries and Settlements has been added to the eGallery.

Recent re-analysis of an Iron Age Settlement site at Blackstone, near Bewdley

Blackstone Site

WHEAS re-visits excavations carried out in the 1970s at Blackstone in North Worcestershire.

In 1957 a fascinating Iron Age Settlement was discovered by aerial photography, in the form of a double-ditched promontory enclosure overlooking the River Severn at Blackstone, near Bewdley.

Carp's Tongue - a style of Bronze Age sword

A further survey project made possible by finance from the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund.

In 2007-8 a study of archaeological remains along the Severn's banks, from Worcester to Tewkesbury, revealed details of industry and trade from the late prehistoric period onwards. Read on This is a link to a PDF file. (199.81 KB)
